One whos still alive and we can ask is Abraham Bolden, the first African American Secret Service agent to serve on the White House detail.

Secret Service didn't like African Americans in 1963. Ask Agent Abraham Bolden.
Former U.S. Secret Service Agent Abraham BOLDEN was the first African American Secret Service agent to serve in the White House, personally appointed and literally hand-picked by President John F. Kennedy to the White House detail. Agent Abraham Bolden reported overt racism by his fellow agents and outright hostility toward the "n------loving president," quoting fellow Secret Service agents on the JFK detail.
In addition to enduring all manner of personal indignities, he was concerned at the lack of professionalism in those assigned to protect the president and reported his concerns. He was told, "OK. Thanks" by his superiors. When the problems weren't addressed, Bolden requested transfer back to the Secret Service office in Chicago.

While Mr. Bolden is advanced in years, he is still sharp of mind.

The Chicago Plot to Kill JFK
From the Forward, written in 1980:
Five years ago, on commission from Atlantic Monthly, I began investigating a Chicago conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy just twenty days before Dallas. When I asked the wrong questions and came too close to sensitive information, I was followed and investigated by a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) operative. By examining my own files, I identified him and embarrassed the DIA into halting the harassment. Theres a record of their "project" in the credit bureau where it began, Credit Information Corporation (named Cook County Credit Bureau at the time). The DIAs inquiry listed my employer as Atlantic Monthly, although that assignment was my only work for the magazine.
Unfortunately, the harassment didnt end until after my apartment was broken into. No valuables were taken. But all my files were obviously and clumsily searched.
But that was five years ago, before Watergate, a different era. Today, when reporters edge close to dirty government secrets, it is the agencies that become nervous. And they think thrice before attempting the retaliation and tactics once common to the game.
My investigation, revived within the past eight months, took me to New York, Long Island, Houston and Washington as well as through courts, warehouses, police stations and federal offices in Chicago.
Hundreds of hours scrutinizing federal, state and local documents, dozens of interviews, hundreds of leads. And always with the Secret Service and FBI working against me. Doing what they could do make the investigation tedious, time-consuming and expensive. Perhaps they hoped the investigation would just disappear for all the obstructions.
I hope they now know they must come up with the answers. It is simply unacceptable to wait until the 21st Century for the release of seventy or so top secret Warren Commission documents.

(22,409 posts)The decision to take off the top was theirs, not his. The agents guarding JFK weren't all on JFK's side, SS Agent Abraham Bolden reported recently:
[div clas="excerpt"]
First black member of Secret Service finally testifies to JFK committee, details Chicago assassination plot
By Isabel Vincent
New York Post, May 21, 2025
EXCERPT...
He was serious about giving everyone equal opportunity, Bolden said of Kennedy in a 2008 TV interview. He never walked by me once that he didnt strike up a conversation.
In his 2008 book, The Echo from Dealey Plaza: The True Story of the First African American on the White House Secret Service Detail and His Quest for Justice After the Assassination of JFK, Bolden wrote about the racism he encountered from other agents on the presidents team, claiming they were often drunk on the job.
In his testimony Tuesday, he spoke about overhearing an angry 1963 meeting between Kennedy and his vice president Lyndon Johnson in the Oval Office in which Johnson accused Kennedy of dropping him from his run for president the following year, warning the president to better stop fking with me.'
He was redder than a sack of beets, Bolden said, referring to Johnson when he stormed out of the Oval Office.
He also outlined a report he heard at a staff meeting about threats to kill Kennedy with a high-powered rifle at an Army-Air Force football game in Chicago on November 2, nearly three weeks before he was killed.
Information that I had revealed was that some Cuban exiles were trying to assassinate the president when he came to Chicago, Bolden said, adding that he knew from one of the agencys weekly meetings that there had been threats against the president at the campaign stop in Dallas where was shot dead.

(40,083 posts)Mr. SPECTER. What decision had been made as to whether to have an open car in Dallas?
Mr. O'DONNELL. The. decision had been made to have an open--if the weather was good, he would ride in an open car.
Mr. SPECTER. And do you recall who made that decision?
Mr. O'DONNELL. Well, I would make that decision under normal circumstances. But it was almost an automatic decision, that whenever the weather was clear, he preferred to ride in an open car.
The motorcade through Dallas was intended to expose the President to as many people as possible. Here are some more quotes from O'donnell's testimony before the Warren Commission
Mr. SPECTER. Did he enjoy that exposure, strictly as a personal matter?
Mr. O'DONNELL. He enjoyed it very much. The President--liked people, and he liked to mingle with people.
Mr. O'DONNELL. Well, we had a motorcade wherever we went. Particularly when we went to a large city, the purpose of going there was to give the President as much exposure to the people of Dallas and vice versa, the people of Dallas to the President, as possible.
So he he felt it was a duty of the Presidency to expose himself to the public.
Larry O'Brien was another of Kennedy's closest aides who had run his campaigns since 1956 testified to the President's known preference to ride in open cars when possible. From his testimony
Mr. ADAMS. While we are on that subject, just to digress for a moment, what was his attitude toward riding in open cars?
Mr. O'BRIEN. It was certainly his preference. He had always expressed a view that in our democracy a President should, whenever possible, be exposed to the people. And I think, also, he felt the people should be exposed to him. He always wanted to have the closest possible contact with people. And in that context his preference certainly at all times was an open car.
Mr. O'BRIEN. But certainly we were totally aware of his desires in that area. And this had, of course, been his position not only in the United States but in trips outside the country.

(22,409 posts)Excerpt...
In 1960 O'Donnell was the organizer and director of John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign schedule. The following year he became Kennedy's special assistant. O'Donnell was an early critic of the Vietnam War and advised Kennedy to bring an end to America's involvement in the conflict.
In November, 1963, he was involved in the organization of the presidential trip to Dallas, Texas. This involved discussions with Winston G. Lawson (secret service agent in charge of the trip), Roy Kellerman and Jesse Curry (chief of police in Dallas).
On the 22nd November, 1963, O'Donnell travelled in the Secret Service car immediately behind the presidential car. O'Donnell later wrote, "After the second shot, Dave Powers said to me, 'Kenny, I think the president's been shot!' I made a quick sign of the cross. While we both stared at the president, a third shot took the side of his head off. We saw pieces of bone and brain tissue and bits of reddish hair flying through the air. The impact lifted him and shook him limply as if he were a rag doll, and then he dropped out of our sight, sprawled across the back seat of the car."
Several witnesses said that William Greer stopped the car after the first shot was fired. This included Jean Hill, who was the closest witness to the car when Kennedy was hot: According to Hill "the motorcade came to almost a halt at the time the shots rang out". James Chaney (one of the four Presidential motorcyclists) - stated that the limousine "after the shooting, from the time the first shot rang out, the car stopped completely, pulled to the left and stopped." Mary Woodward, a journalist with the Dallas Morning News wrote: "Instead of speeding up the car, the car came to a halt... after the first shot".
O'Donnell later wrote: "If the Secret Service men in the front had reacted quicker to the first two shots at the President's car, if the driver had stepped on the gas before instead of after the fatal third shot was fired, would President Kennedy be alive today? He added "Greer had been remorseful all day, feeling that he could have saved President Kennedy's life by swerving the car or speeding suddenly after the first shots."
O'Donnell told the Warren Commission that the shooting had come from the rear. He later told his friend, Tip O'Neill, that he had been under pressure from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to say this. In fact, he believed that the gunfire had come from in front of the motorcade. O'Donnell commented: "I told the FBI what I had heard, but they said it couldn't have happened that way and that I must have been imagining things. So I testified the way they wanted me to. I just didn't want to stir up any more pain and trouble for the family." This story was backed up by David F. Powers, who was sitting next to O'Donnell in the motorcade.

(22,409 posts)JFK had ordered CIA to stop trying to kill Castro. They didn't and the same crew appear to be the ones who turned around and assassinated President Kennedy. Details...

Howard Hughes' "fixer," Robert Maheu, served as the go-between. The scheme was launched when Dwight Eisenhower was president and VP Richard Nixon was the CIA White House Action Officer.
CIA hired the Mafia to assassinate Fidel Castro.
The CIAs director of security, Howard J. Osborn, sends a detailed summary to the deputy director on the CIA-Mafia collaboration to assassinate Castro before the Bay of Pigs invasion. The history starts with the authorization from the deputy director for plans, Richard Bissell, for a sensitive mission requiring gangster-type action. The mission target was the liquidation of Fidel Castro. The report describes how Robert Maheu was used as a CIA cutout to approach mobsters Johnny Roselli and Sam Gold. It also describes how the CIAs Technical Services Division developed a pill that had the elements of rapid solubility, high lethal content, and little or no traceability as an assassination device. Six pills were produced and passed initially to a Cuban official with mafia ties, Juan Orta. When he got cold feet, the pills were passed to a member of the Cuba Exile Junta, Anthony Verona, to pass to operatives in Havana. But, the report states, Veronas potential was never fully exploited as the project was cancelled shortly after the Bay of Pigs episode.
From the memo:
7. The pitch was made to Roselli on 14 September 1960 at the Hilton Plaza Hotel, New York City. His initial reaction was to avoid getting involved but, through Maheu's persuasion, he agreed to introduce him to a friend, Sam Gold, who knew the "Cuban crowd." Roselli made it clear he did not want any money for his part and believed Sam would feel the same way. Neither of these individuals were ever paid out of Agency funds.
Read the mostly unredacted memo at GWU National Security Archives:
https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/document/20836-6
Mr. Roselli and Mr. Giancana could appear when the House Select Committee on Assassinations subpoenaed them in the late 1970s. Roselli's body was discovered cut into pieces and stuffed into an oil drum floating near Miami. "Sam Gold" referenced in the CIA memo was actually Sam Giancana. Mr. Giancana died in his home in Oak Park, Illinois, where he was shot to death in the back of the head and then six times around the mouth.

Receipts on George H.W. Bush:
History Lesson missing from post-Dallas curricula...
George H. W. Bush was in Dallas on November 22, 1963. I know so because AFTER THE ASSASSINATION he phoned the FBI to report a name he heard threaten JFK:

TO: SAC, HOUSTON DATE: 11-22-63
FROM: SA GRAHAM W. KITCHEL
SUBJECT: UNKNOWN SUBJECT;
ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT
JOHN F. KENNEDY
At 1:45 p.m. Mr. GEORGE H. W. BUSH, President of the Zapata Off-Shore Drilling Company, Houston, Texas, residence 5525 Briar, Houston, telephonically furnished the following information to writer by long distance telephone call from Tyler, Texas.
BUSH stated that he wanted to be kept confidential but wanted to furnish hearsay that he recalled hearing in recent weeks, the day and source unknown. He stated that one JAMES PARROTT has been talking of killing the President when he comes to Houston.
BUSH stated that PARROTT is possibly a student at the University of Houston and is active in political matters in this area. He stated that he felt Mrs. FAWLEY, telephone number SU 2-5239, or ARLINE SMITH, telephone number JA 9-9194 of the Harris County Republican Party Headquarters would be able to furnish additional information regarding the identity of PARROTT.
BUSH stated that he was proceeding to Dallas, Texas, would remain in the Sheraton-Dallas Hotel and return to his residence on 11-23-63. His office telephone number is CA 2-0395.

Of course, we didnt know any of that until decades later when another FBI memo mentioned Mr. GEORGE Bush of the CIA popped up when Poppy was running for preznit.

Date: November 29, 1963
To: Director
Bureau of Intelligence and Research
Department of State
From: John Edgar Hoover, Director
Subject: ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY
NOVEMBER 22, 1963
Our Miami, Florida, Office on November 23, 1963, advised that the Office of Coordinator of Cuban Affairs in Miami advised that the Department of State feels some misguided anti-Castro group might capitalize on the present situation and undertake an unauthorized raid against Cuba, believing that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy might herald a change in U. S. policy, which is not true.
Our sources and informants familiar with Cuban matters in the Miami area advise that the general feeling in the anti-Castro Cuban community is one of stunned disbelief and, even among those who did not entirely agree with the President's policy concerning Cuba, the feeling is that the President's death represents a great loss not only to the U. S. but to all of Latin America. These sources know of no plans for unauthorized action against Cuba.
An informant who has furnished reliable information in the past and who is close to a small pro-Castro group in Miami has advised that these individuals are afraid that the assassination of the President may result in strong repressive measures being taken against them and, although pro-Castro in their feelings, regret the assassination.
The substance of the foregoing information was orally furnished to Mr. George Bush of the Central Intelligence Agency and Captain William Edwards of the Defense Intelligence Agency on November 23, 1963, by Mr. W. T. Forsyth of this Bureau.

Abstract
Recently, important new evidence came to light about Joseph Adams Milteer, the Georgian who, nearly two weeks before the assassination, was recorded on tape talking about a pending plot to shoot the president from a tall building with a rifle that had been taken apart to get it inside. The new evidence confirms long-standing concerns that J. Edgar Hoovers FBI failed to adequately investigate the murder of President Kennedy. Since the FBI was the principal investigative arm of the Warren Commission, the evidence also is an endorsement of those who have criticized the Warren Reports finding that there was no conspiracy, foreign or domestic, behind the assassination.
