Trump promises to send $2,000 tariff dividend checks 'probably the middle of next year, a little bit later than that'

President Donald Trump promised on Monday that his administration will begin issuing $2,000 “tariff dividend” checks to Americans around the middle of 2026, the most specific timetable he has offered yet on a proposal that can’t seem to find a home within a campaign-esque promise, economic argument and political provocation.

“We’re going to be issuing dividends later on, somewhere prior to … probably the middle of next year, a little bit later than that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, according to Axios. The payments, he said, would go to “individuals of moderate income, middle income.”

The commitment marks an escalation from Trump’s earlier, vaguer assertions that tariffs are generating enough money to fund direct payments to American households. But turning the idea into actual checks is far more complicated than his easy-going rhetoric suggests.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made that clear over the weekend, saying on Fox News that the administration “needs legislation” to distribute any such dividend.

I really, really hope our Dem leaders figure out a way to avoid the popularity and potential for success of an outright bribe to the voters. We live in such interesting times. And this is yet another example of why we need to be more commonly appealing to the bulk of the population and win elections.

My only question is whether he'll make it an election issue with an absolutely direct quid pro quo. "Vote in Republicans, and the lame duck Congress and I will send you a $2,000 check in December."

Not sure our overlords understand the appeal of cold, hard cash

Anyway, added to the $5k DOGE check coming my way, things are looking up

that's right before/at the time of the mid-terms. And the sheeple will fall for it, just like they did his "health care plan in two weeks scam". The guy sure knows how to con the public.

At least in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul kept her word about "refund checks".

There was talk of up to $200 in checks (NYS Taxation Special Tax Refund) going out a few weeks ago.
I was skeptical, but I got mine in the mail last Saturday.

Their own projections are claiming $195 billion in tariff revenues for '25..Again, these are their numbers so I'm not saying they're true.
$195 billion divided by 340 million people is $560.
Besides, these tariffs were supposed to pay down national debt. Now, they give away more money than they're taking in?
This is not merely an empty promise. It's a lie cut from whole cloth.
