Trump Says He Won’t Support Obamacare Subsidies
November 18, 2025 at 10:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard

President Trump said he will not support legislation to extend expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies even as senators are preparing to tee up a vote on the issue, complicating his party’s efforts to address health care costs, Bloomberg reports.

Trump said on Truth Social the only health-care plan he would “SUPPORT OR APPROVE” would be “SENDING THE MONEY DIRECTLY BACK TO THE PEOPLE” instead of to insurance companies.

And it will involve "sending money back to people" so they can pay the insurance companies instead of the government paying the insurance companies. And since it won't be regulated the people can pay the insurance companies even more, and for worse coverage - just like the bad old days before the ACA.

I may even look exactly like the ACA. But it will have "Trump" on it. That's all that matters.

Send the money back to the people. Oh trump the great populist. Give thousands of dollars each to the people right before the mid terms in the forms of bouncing checks, then blame the Dems. Who will be your standard bearer next republicans? Some GOP Pol with skeletons we’ve yet to hear about? Just sit out elections republicans and enjoy democracy. You’ll be amazed how much you like it. You’ll long for it and blame Dems for you missing out. Then you’ll crow about your values. You are getting tired of it aren’t you?

directly to people, it would go to an "authorized" insurance company on behalf of ACA covered individuals. Not much different from what we have now.

Would be better to just scrap everything and cover everyone, but chances of that are close to nil nowadays.

The money doesn't go to the insurance company until someone enrolls in an ACA insurance plan.

Sending the money directly to each individual to buy an ACA policy would just add extra steps and make the process much less efficient.

His "policy" makes no sense. Unless he's trying to open up the markets to more insurance companies.

worthy health insurance program until someone comes along with the vision and votes to get universal coverage.

They are not going to send $500, $1000, or $2000 a month to ACA eligibles, don't care what trump says.

As usual.

There isn't going to be any money. Imagine what happens when you have to face hospital bills raw without an insurance company.

The HSA is just a savings account you can use to pay medical and related expenses not covered by your health insurance, and it's not taxed when paid into the account. I had one as an employee benefit when I was working, and I deposited the maximum allowable amount every year. It lasted quite awhile after I retired. But it's not a substitute for health insurance. And if the plan is just to allow people to deduct medical expenses from their taxes, that won't do a damn thing for people who are already too poor to be paying federal tax.

...for a week in ICU was $1.1mln. Yeah, insurance covered most of it. But w/o it, his family would be bankrupt.
