The Official Voice of the US Government Is Cruel, Gross, and Weird. What Is That Doing to Us?

At the moment, the official voice of the US government is a rancid mixture of trolling, cruelty, propaganda, and crass jokes about the human suffering they’re creating.

Joking memes about imprisonment, deportation, and death by alligator are designed to radicalize and desensitize.

In March, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a woman they accused of drug trafficking and entering the country illegally. Standing in a parking lot, they photographed her, weeping, eyes half-closed in anguish, her arms cuffed behind her back. And then—in a cruel innovation specific to the Trump administration—the White House’s official Twitter account used an AI tool to make a cartoon illustration of her crying and handcuffed, in the style of the beloved Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli. The tweet got 155,000 likes, a mix of outraged and delighted responses, and, as it was designed to, a lot of attention: it’s so far been viewed 76 million times. On Twitter, many users posted positive responses declaring that the image was exactly what they had voted for.

This is, at the moment, the official voice of the US government: a rancid mixture of trolling, cruelty, propaganda, and crass jokes about the human suffering they’re creating, an effort, as Wired’s Tess Owen recently put it, to turn actions like mass deportation into “one big joke.” On Instagram and Twitter (their largest audience), government entities including the White House, ICE, and the Department of Homeland Security attempt to surf viral trends to expanded public attention: They twist memes and sounds popular on TikTok, repurpose South Park’s parodies for their own self-promotion, and blend it all with images that draw on or directly reproduce classical art and Americana paintings that are designed to stir nostalgia for an imagined past. (The use of some of this art, as the Washington Post has written, has stirred the ire of the artists themselves or their representatives; it’s not easy to extract a stern condemnation from the estate of treacly pastoral painter Thomas Kinkade, but this government managed to do it.)

A lot of the trends are specifically designed to appeal to young white men, like one that repurposes a 1970s-looking ad for a van to ask, “Want to deport illegals with your absolute boys?” Another ICE recruitment effort asks, “Which way, American man?” in front a befuddled-looking Uncle Sam gazing at a crossroads post labeled with signs including “INVASION,” “CULTURAL DECLINE” pointing one way, and, pointing the other, “SERVICE,” “OPPORTUNITY”; in Uncle Sam’s hands lies “LAW AND ORDER.” The phrase “Which way, American man?” is a barely altered reference to the phrase “Which way, Western man?,” the title of a book by white nationalist author William Gayley Simpson that’s been popularized by the far right as a meme. In this case, the white supremacist undertones are more like overtones.

repeated use of "weird."

Calling them weird downplays the horror of the MAGA mentality.
Not to mention that being "weird" is a good thing.

driving on the freeways or interstates..............there is a whole new level of being inconsiderate, and driving like they are the only ones on the road, as well as all traffic laws are for others.........

I am extremely well educated in Defensive Driving, and some days, even that is almost not enough..........My son has forbidden his kids from driving on any Interstate, or Main road.......Traffic in Denver on the Interstate and main roads is bumper to bumper, most of the day and evenings, just like Rush hour...........
The Denver Police issued a statement that their officers will no longer be writing tickets for low level traffic infractions.....which seemingly has escalated the asshole drivers immensely in the Denver Area...........Driving without a driver's license, plates, current or any registration, insurance or a safe vehicle has become epidemic around here.................

Coincidentally, when out driving, I am seeing a whole bunch of cars, still sporting the license plates from where they all came from:
TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA..........I sure hope they are all Dems, and fleeing those states !!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if it wasn't some some of those states are looser for either insurance or inspections. I know California is strict on inspections, I know the other two are loose on inspections and have low insurance requirements. Plus with the stricter requirements for identity for driver's licenses it can be hard to move it to a new state if a person isn't set up with an official address. I feel part of the careless and aggressive driving is from video games where accidents aren't game over they way they are in real life. People use turn signals much less than before.

and that is the reason they are still using their former states license plates, even outdated.....LOL

Colorado did away with their vehicle safety inspections required every year decades ago......They checked lights, tires, brakes.
The condition of cars now, with their lights, tires, brakes, in many cases is horrible..........

My grandmother used to say: things are going to hell in a breadbasket"........she would croak if she saw things now......

And the Colorado minimums for car insurance are beyond ludicrous for covering anything. We have Un-Insured motorist, and Under-Insured motorist coverage on our Auto Policies, and pretty high levels of the basic amounts for general coverage.......Plus a Million dollar Umbrella policy on top of it........

So I pay a little extra to get a "safety check" done every oil change, so I can keep up on those important elements.

one of our Republican governors decades ago, had a buddy who came up with the idea of emission testing here in only the Denver Metro area, and got the governor to give him exclusive right to installing the program to make him a personal fortune.
This yearly inspection, (on most cars and trucks) costs a bunch, and in many ways is a joke.....

Driving has always been tough with congestion, but I'm thinking a large number of people who weren't essential drivers decided that with less traffic on the road, they didn't have to worry about other drivers and could just drive however the hell they wanted to.

And now those selfish, childish gits are still mad they have to follow the traffic laws now that everyone is back at work and the roads are as congested as they were in 2019.

they want a population to lose all sense of humanity and decency so they can accept horrible atrocities that are unacceptable to normal decent humans. They like to use war language to scare people. Fear for your lives so you will accept whatever BS we choose next.

He and his trolls are destroying the Presidency. It's not doing anything to "us".

Trump is a debaser.
