Todd Snider, Folk Singer With a Wry Wit, Dies at 59
Mentored by the likes of Jimmy Buffett and John Prine, his big-hearted ballads told of heartache even as his humor revealed a steadfast optimism.

Todd Snider, the folk singer and songwriter whose wry wit coursed through big-hearted ballads rallying for the underdog, and whose charming onstage stories of mishap and skulduggery often lasted longer than the songs they introduced, died on Friday in Nashville. He was 59.

Mr. Snider’s publicist confirmed his death and said the cause was pneumonia.

This month, Mr. Snider canceled the remaining dates of a tour in support of his latest album, “High, Lonesome and Then Some,” after he was involved in an assault outside his hotel in Salt Lake City, where he had been scheduled to perform.

A statement posted to his social media account on Nov. 3 said that the singer had sustained “severe injuries” and that he would be unable to perform for an “undetermined amount of time.” Additional details of the assault were unclear.

I liked his storytelling style.

My absolute favorite. So glad of his recent releases with him telling stories of his songs and life.
It’s like I can sit here and have him talk and laugh with me about life. And slam GQPer’s.
I hope he and John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker are putting together an album for us to hear when we get there. They were good friends, Jerry Jeff was a mentor to him through all his adult life.
So long dear Todd. Hope your horrible back pain is all gone.

Such a gifted wordsmith...

It was during the 'East Nashville Skyline' days.

Saw him a few times after that but never really got to sit and talk to him.

Was able to chat more with Will Kimbrough. Was always running into him. I was also there for a bit of the famous Grimey's performance.
