(393 posts)Im sure Comcast brass thought of it as a liability no matter what they did with it. One where theyd anger a good deal of their MSNBC viewers who also consume their other products if they tried to mollify Trump and obviously face the regulatory and litigious wrath if they didnt. The promise of splintering and selling it has probably kept Trump at bay so far. Im afraid that he might already have a Trump approved buyer in mind. The major media landscape wasnt great before the Trump 47, but its going to look positively dystopic afterwards.

MSNBC changed its name to MS NOW because it is being spun off from Comcast into a new, separate company called Versant. This corporate separation allows MS NOW to establish its own identity, build its own newsgathering operations, and compete with its former parent company, NBC News.

(128,335 posts)It's supposed to stand for My Source for News, Opinion and the World. Kind of a stretch if you ask me, but acronyms are often tortured. I'd rather they named it MEOW, maybe to stand for My Exciting Odd World or something like that. I could easily remember MEOW, and there's a lot they could do with advertising and logos.

(2,092 posts)With all the buyouts and rightwingers trying to pull off a universal mediascape capture, I can get used to the new name. But if my TV friends abandon ship....
Also the new name makes me think of "Ms. [Magazine] + National Organization of Women," so there's that!

(10,843 posts)... should be their alternate name. They are not a 24/7 all-news network and air a lot of reruns and pre-taped segments. During those times, I think MS NOW is not an appropriate name. Then, MS THEN should be used!

(4,534 posts)It leaves one speculating what "MS" stands for.
It's not graceful to say .... very awkward, doesn't flow well.
What 'genius' thought of it? They should be fired.

(24,061 posts)MSNBC had no choice to change when it was divested from NBC. I do regret the separation because there are certainly advantages to being connected to a legacy network with all their resources. But this is the reality and it was not of their choosing. The network, now MSNOW, has been working to develop their own reporters and are really building up Carol Leonnig and Ken Delanian who have already broken a lot of stories, beating out CNN and the NYT. They are doing their best and I'm willing to give them a chance.
