he is the only one being mentioned in a discussion about running for that office. Hence, while we can say we need Democrats in the House, we can safely not include a single one of them in this particular discussion.

It certainly does not involve any other House member. But it surely will matter what the voters think. Big difference.

(124,396 posts)There was also a relationship with an alleged Chinese spy so Swalwell will have obstacles to overcome. While MAGA will emphasize those stories, I believe that Swalwell has demonstrated the personal character that makes him worthy to be on the ballot and to be governor.

(124,396 posts)However, the mortgage fraud case (and negative publicity) is going to run throughout the next few months so I felt that your statement that Swalwell doesn't have any baggage was not entirely accurate since he is involved in an active investigation.
While we (as Democrats) recognize the games that the GOP plays with their propaganda and weaponizing the DOJ, people who are independents or the middle of the political spectrum may not recognize it.

(57,326 posts)In a statewide race, unlike his very blue district race, Republicans would push it big time, and I'm not just talking about the ridiculous Pulte mortgage investigation. Get on his Twitter feed and you'll see what I'm talking about. But in blue California, whoever is the Dem nominee will likely win, regardless of baggage.
And Swalwell is running behind Porter in his own poll that his supporters paid for:
Both Swalwell and Porter would make great governors, but as former constituent and volunteer for Porter, I know her and like her a lot. She's got my vote in the primary.

If Swalwell wins, he can pick up the torch of trolling Trump. He's even better than Newsom at that.

(57,326 posts)Yes, she slipped 6 points, because she fell victim to the double standard we have for female politicians--they are not allowed to show anger. But she is not running behind both Republicans, according to a Berkeley IGS Poll released Nov. 7. Only one Republican, crazy Trumper Sheriff Chad Bianco, is above her, and only because there are only 2 serious Republican contenders running to split the Republican vote, unlike on the Democratic side.

The primary election will be held in June, where the field of candidates running for governor of California will winnow down to two, whom voters will decide between next November. Porter has plenty of time to regroup.
The Berkeley IGS Poll found that support for Bianco was largely along party lines, with 37% of Republican voters supporting him, compared to just 1% of Democrats. https://www.desertsun.com/story/news/nation/california/2025/11/13/latest-california-governor-race-poll-primary-elections/87231067007/
If it was between Porter and Bianco in November, she would wipe the floor with him. California hates Trump and anyone associated with him. That is why Prop. 50 won by a 2 to 1 margin 2 weeks ago.

(1,003 posts)I dont like how Porter treats her staff. Its a deal breaker for me.
I dont care what your position is.
If you dont treat people that work for you with respect, I have none for you and will also not vote for you.

(57,326 posts)It was not said in public, the staffer was not publicly humiliated. All she said was "Get out of the fucking shot." She was filming a video for Biden and the staffer wandered into the shot. That was 5 years ago. That is all people base this "she's mean to staff" claim on. If a man had told that to a staffer who had mistakenly wandered into a shot and forced a reshooting of the video, the staffer would have apologized and we would have never heard about it. Those kind of statements are said at work places all of the time. When men say it, they are considered tough and in control; when women say it, they're considered mean, bitchy or hysterical. It is a sexist double standard.
I was a volunteer for Katie Porter when she was running in my purple district in Orange County, CA. Phone banking was tough going because the district included very red Huntington Beach. She often showed up at the campaign office as we toiled away to cheer us on and inspire us, bringing cookies and pizza. She was always kind to us and very down to earth.
As a single mom running a campaign (her kids were teens then), she had a no-nonsense style and used swear words, like most adults I know do. But apparently female candidates are not allowed to, even in private. I think that's bullshit.
fujiyamasan
(1,003 posts)But Im a little tired of the reaction being attributed to sexism. I wouldnt have cared if it was a man or woman, I just dont like abusive bosses. I also dont give a shit about swearing.
My impression of her treatment of staffers wasnt shaped just by the recent video. I had heard other allegations previously and I didnt like her responses to it, or the way she reacted to Schiff winning the primary. I found it ridiculous.
Either way, it will be a wide open primary and Ill evaluate all of our choices next year as we get closer to the nomination. Any candidate will be better than a republican leading this state. Thats for sure!
