This WAS the moment, Chuck

"So while Chuck Schumer stated last night that “this fight will and must continue. Democrats must fight,” it certainly does appear that this was the fight.

THIS was the moment.

And eight Democratic senators (and unofficially Schumer?) cowered to assholes giving billions to scumbags spending $300 million on ballrooms, $200 million on private jets with no engines, giving $40 billion to that dancing Argentinian weirdo, and auctioning $64,000 Thailand vacation packages while Americans struggle with grocery and healthcare costs.

There are 47 Senate Democrats. Replacing Chuck Schumer as minority leader and Dick Durbin as whip would require just 24 votes."

The message of the Democratic Party "fighting" is a joke. When exactly will the Democratic Party fight? If they won't fight over a massive increase in the deficit due to tax cuts to the rich, paid for by devastating cuts to Medicaid and other essential programs, what will they fight for? Oh..I know..they'll fight for healthcare, the flagship ACA program that made healthcare available to millions. Yes, they'll fight for that.

Oh..nevermind.

Next is Medicare and Social Security.

I give up. We need a party overall or a third party.

https://newrepublic.com/post/202942/democrat-caved-shutdown-chuck-schumer-knew-shaheen

Senator Jeanne Shaheen revealed that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer knew the entire time about the plan for a few Democrats to capitulate to Republicans on the government shutdown.
Shaheen, one of the seven Democrats (and one independent) who dropped their demand for a guaranteed extension of Obamacare subsidies, spoke to Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade on Monday morning.

“No, we kept leadership informed throughout,” Shaheen responded. “And I think it’s important to remember who’s responsible for why we got into this shutdown. We are here because we are concerned about the health care costs rising significantly on millions of Americans, and we didn’t have any indication before the shutdown started that our Republican colleagues were willing to address it.”

Aside from serving as further proof that the Democrats are failing to act as an opposition party in any meaningful way, Shaheen’s comments also reveal one of two possible scenarios. Either Schumer was scheming to end the shutdown behind the scenes, only pretending to be against it while pinning the blame on the eight people who aren’t up for reelection anytime soon, or he has no control over his party. Either way, it proves the need for Democrats to jettison the minority leader.

It is their duty to keep us informed so that our decisions reflect facts on the ground, not a sanitized and watered down version of events concocted by unelected consultants.
We are not mushrooms to be kept in the dark and fed bullshit.
Conversely, it is our duty as constituents to pay attention when they do tell us what's going on in the halls of power, and to apply reason and logic to our responses when we convey our thoughts and desires to our aforementioned elected officials making decisions that might adversely affect the lives of millions. It was an unwinnable battle.

Honestly, what WAS the likelihood all 3 of these things would happen by prolonging the shutdown:
1. ACA subsidies pass the Senate
2. and pass the House
3. and Trump signs the legislation

Republicans have wanted to destroy the "Welfare State" for generations. If there was no realistic chance of saving the ACA subsidies by prolonging the shutdown, the consequence would be even more pain for the most vulnerable as the Project 2025 agenda advances.

It's easy to stand on principle if you don't rely on SNAP benefits to feed your hungry children.

Personally, I'm not currently impacted by the shutdown. Nobody in my extended family receives SNAP. I'm not a government employee working for no pay who is less likely to get back pay and more likely to be among the next mass layoff if not for the few concessions gained by ending the shutdown.

We can disagree about whether Trump and Republicans in the Senate & House were likely to concede and restore ACA subsidies.

But we want the same thing. I understand the frustration and anger at losing this battle, but in my opinion ending the shutdown was the least bad of two horrible options. Perhaps they should have waited to see how the lower court order to pay SNAP benefits finally played out in the Supreme Court -- but I'm not among the people going hungry in the meantime.

There was no chance the Rethugs would vote to restore ACA subsidies.

But prolonging the shutdown would at least delay SNAP benefits, for how long no one knows.

It would also allow more mass layoffs of federal employees, crippling services the American people depend on.

Senate Democrats ended the shutdown to limit the damage to our government and help people struggling to afford food.
