It would be a stretch, but it could be argued that the imposition of tariffs has caused companies to invest (or to plan on investing) over a trillion dollars in building new manufacturing facilities in America. However, Trump makes it sound like the tariffs have added over a trillion dollars directly to the Treasury coffers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that total tariff revenue for the full year could be around $300 billion. That's at most 6% of total US revenues. Not quite the $17 Trillion Trump claims.

As for the impact of the tariffs on the Treasury:

Revenue taken in by the US Treasury in FY 2025 (includes tariffs) = $4.69 Trillion.

US Spending in FY 2025 $6.66 Trillion.

Surplus = NEGATIVE $1.97 Trillion

Amount added to National debt = $1.97 Trillion

that Trump pulled that preposterously massive figure out of thin air. Just like the 18 wars he stopped on his lunch hour today.
