The former Marine who police say attacked and burned a central Michigan house of worship, killing four, had ranted against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a week before his deadly assault, a local politician told the Detroit Free Press.
Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, went on a tirade against the church and called Mormons "the Antichrist," Kris Johns, a candidate for the local Burton City Council, told the newspaper, part of the USA TODAY Network. Johns was canvassing when he knocked on Sanford's door and spoke with the ex-Marine days before the deadly rampage.
It was very much standard anti-LDS talking points that you would find on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook," said Johns, adding that he has spoken with local police and the FBI about his encounter with Sanford.
Investigators recovered improvised explosive devices after the attack, said James Deir, special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Detroit field office told reporters. Deir did not say where the devices were recovered.
Officials at the news conference, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and federal, state and local law enforcement, did not address Sanford's reported comments.

So he was, IMO, either a disaffected Mormon turned, Talibangelical, or a straight up Talibangelical, which is what I said yesterday before I read this. I have no particular love for Mormons, but they are generally peaceable (except the FLDS) and deserve to worship in peace.

(127,484 posts)that throughout history nobody has attacked Christians more enthusiastically than other Christians. Most of the wars in Europe for the last thousand years or so have been one Christian sect against another. Even before the Reformation the Catholic Church was persecuting other Christian sects like the Gnostics and the Albigensians, then after the Reformation all hell broke loose and the Christian vs. Christian fighting continued through the 30 Years War, the Mountain Meadows massacre in the US and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. When you complain about violence against Christians it might be a good idea to first determine whether it's another Christian doing the violence, since it often is.
when history is cited and enumerates examples..............too bad the talking heads in the media never cite a list like this. it might encourage folks to actually look things up to see the truth of the matter in a historical way instead of a hysterical way.

(127,484 posts)to create a religion and make money off it, like Scientology. I know a perfectly nice liberal Lutheran pastor who thinks Mormons are heretics (and they probably are, if you compare LDS theology to traditional Christian beliefs), but he certainly isn't about to go out and shoot any of them.

(3,078 posts)They deny this, of course, but I've never seen such a ridiculous cottage industry built around what they call "apologetics". If you listen to or watch any of their media outlets (EWTN, Relevant Radio, etc.), you will see a non-stop barrage of pundits--almost none of them ordained, BTW--selling books, websites, etc. opposing pretty much every mainline denomination including the "fringier" ones like Mormonism. They even have an answer for the Orthodox Jews: the far-right clergy in Catholicism just created a whole new religious order for "Mother Miriam", a "star" on EWTN who converted from conservative Judaism.
IIRC, a few years ago, the publishing arm of EWTN had a bestseller book titled When Mormons Call. Yeah, that's the ticket...I don't have any bigger fish to fry than to sit around for years waiting for "Mormons to call" and ring my doorbell--so that I can argue with them about how they're "apostates" unless they RETVRN TO TRADITION AND TRVTH by converting to Latin Mass Catholicism.

(18,091 posts)The LDS would know if he was a member or not, and they'd be quick to capitalize on the "see, this is the evil/danger of straying" angle.

(18,912 posts)(and I'm related to a LOT of them) hate Mormons. Virulently.
They say they aren't "Christians"...but several of them say that about Catholics too. So, this is unsurprising to me.
Anyway, once they declare the US a theocracy, there will be a knock-down drag-out fight over which brand of right-wing religion wins the government-approved label.
