Slobfather Rails Against Another FBI Director

Days after the Justice Department indicted James Comey, President Donald Trump has suggested that another former FBI director, Christopher Wray, could come under investigation.

Trump on Saturday railed against Wray, whom Trump nominated in 2017 to replace Comey, claiming in a Truth Social post that he had covered up the involvement of FBI agents “acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists” in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump has repeated the unfounded claim that the FBI incited the Capitol riot which occurred after Trump rallied thousands of his supporters over false claims that the 2020 election, which Joe Biden won, had been stolen.

“I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘Agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘Historic’ Day. Many Great American Patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love of their Country. I owe this investigation of ‘Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians’ to them!” Trump posted.

Trump’s comments come as his Administration has launched several investigations into his perceived political adversaries, including Comey last week. Earlier this month, Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Justice Department to more aggressively investigate his foes. And in July, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard outlined claims of criminal wrongdoing against former President Barack Obama and others, whom Trump accused of “treason.” Critics have sounded the alarm that Trump is weaponizing the DOJ to persecute his opponents and eroding the department’s independence.

3. MaddowBlog-It's not just Comey: Trump eyes case against Chris Wray, the other FBI director he ousted

After targeting one former FBI director he forced out, Trump raised the prospect of an investigation into a different former FBI director he forced out.

On Thursday, Trump orchestrated a criminal indictment against one former FBI director he unjustly forced out (James Comey).

But Trump’s online harangue about this nonsense went further than just the usual misinformation. From the president’s missive published to his social media platform:

It was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax. This is different from what Director Christopher Wray stated, over and over again! That’s right, as it now turns out, FBI Agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’ ... Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do. That’s two in a row, Comey and Wray, who got caught LYING, with our Great Country at stake. WE CAN NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN TO AMERICA AGAIN!

Again, the details Trump presented as fact are, in reality, entirely fictional. But pay particular attention to the fact that the president specifically took aim at Wray — the former FBI director he appointed, before ultimately pushing him out without cause — explicitly (and falsely) arguing that Wray lied about what happened on Jan. 6.

A day later, Trump told NBC News that he believes Wray engaged in “inappropriate” behavior during his tenure at the bureau and said he “would think” the Justice Department is investigating him.

“I would imagine. I would certainly imagine. I would think they are doing that,” Trump said when he was asked whether the Justice Department should investigate Wray.

In other words, the president on Thursday successfully orchestrated a criminal indictment against one former FBI director he forced out (James Comey), and a couple of days later, the same president raised the prospect of a Justice Department investigation into a different former FBI director he forced out (Chris Wray).
