With just over 24 hours until a funding lapse, Schumer and his fellow congressional leaders will join Trump at the White House for a last-chance meeting to stave off a shutdown. Its not clear, however, that either party is interested in a dealmaking session.
Speaker Mike Johnson signaled in an interview with CNN that Trump wants to use the meeting to sway Democrats into accepting the GOPs plan without the Obamacare tax credits Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are demanding.
Chuck Schumer came back with a long laundry list of partisan demands that dont fit into this process, and hes going to try to shut the government down. The president wants to talk with him about that and say, dont do that, Johnson told CNNs Jake Tapper on Sunday. He wants to talk with Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and just try to convince them to follow common sense.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who will also attend Mondays meeting, added on NBCs Meet the Press: Its totally up to the Democrats.

(20,329 posts)Common sense dictates that if they CONTINUE the ObamaCare credits, Musk and Thiel and Bezos and Zuckerberg can't get their tax cuts, and tens of millions of Americans losing healthcare is worth it if it makes the broligarchs smile.
That's their "negotiating strategy."

I like to think this will wake up magats, but it won't.

(36,665 posts)even mention that the GOP have the votes to do it themselves?

(20,329 posts)That way, when the people who haven't been paying attention lost their healthcare and start crying, they can say "Well, DEMOCRATS voted for it TOO."
They KNOW what they're doing, and they KNOW what the outcome will be. They just don't want their actions branded as "REPUBLICAN" if they can get DEMOCRATS to SHARE THE BLAME.
But as a "journalist" Tapper's job is to challenge Johnson's BS.

(11,081 posts)They don't want to do that, either. Easier to con dems into bailing them out again, they figure.
I'm in the camp that it's their problem; dems should ONLY agree to the votes if it gets the epstien files released, and otherwise bring on the leopards.
THEY run the govt.
THEY want this done.
Let THEM own it all.

(14,974 posts)Even if the republicans "agree" to do something to get democrats to support something, they will renege via yet another illegal trump "rescission." It's obvious that any chance for a return to democracy will have to wait until the mid-terms. In the meantime, just shut it down. The threats of "mass firings" is actually sardonically funny because they have been and will continue to do that anyway.

These phrases are meaningless, but they are effective on MAGA when used in place of reasoned, logical rationales.
