WI-GOV: Tiffany (R) declines to say if he still backs 6-week abortion ban

GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany declined to say if he still backs a six-week ban on abortion like the one he co-sponsored in Congress, telling WisPolitics he supports the state law he voted for while in the Legislature barring the procedure after 20 weeks.

Tiffany, R-Minocqua, also declined to say whether he would sign a bill that would restrict abortion at earlier than 20 weeks in a pregnancy, instead restating his support for the 2015 law signed by then-Gov. Scott Walker. Tiffany voted for the 20-week ban while in the state Senate.

GOP state lawmakers in early 2024 proposed legislation that would ask voters whether to ban abortions after 14 weeks. Asked about such a restriction and the bill he co-sponsored, Tiffany focused on the ban after 20 weeks, saying “I stand by that bill” and he’d uphold it as guv.

“I mean, this was a product of compromise,” Tiffany said. “You remember the debate. There were people that said there should be unlimited abortions. Some said there should be no abortions at all. We came together with a compromise. I’ve talked to a lot of constituents, friends and relatives about this issue, and it’s a really deeply personal issue, and I think we hit the place of compromise 10 years ago. It’s the law in Wisconsin. I’m going to uphold it.”

Fucking Bullshit.

No one has asked for anything since Roe v. Wade but that that compromise be upheld as the law of the land.

As Rev. Dr. Brockway observes:

...
Still others point to the drawing of first breath, the moment of birth, and a myriad of other options for when life begins. Personally, I found Roe’s focus on fetal viability to be a decent compromise. Once a developing fetus has a fighting chance of surviving outside the womb, elective termination of the pregnancy (outside of serious health complications) is more or less objectively immoral.

What he expresses captures what a vast majority of Americans endorse. Nobody, absolutely nobody has ever been out there advocating termination beyond viability (outside of serious health complications). All claims otherwise are complete bullshit.

When he states the following I think that Rev. Dr. Brockman captures the essence of what many Americans think -- whether they are Christian or not:

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from surveying the Bible’s teaching around life and when it begins is that we need to exercise some humility. As Christians, we should strive to relate all of our views and actions to Scripture. When the witness of Scripture is not fully clear—and especially when it clashes with our assumptions—that should call our own certainty into question and inspire humility.

Maybe we are not meant to fully understand when life begins. Maybe God—in God’s infinite wisdom—decided that such knowledge is beyond our paygrade. And maybe that’s okay.
