The point is to subject them to considerable expense, disruption of their professional and personal lives and those of their families, harassment and threats from MAGA, and all the other misery that comes with being prosecuted, even if they are eventually exonerated -- It's to punish them for previous perceived transgressions against Trump and to deter and/or silence others who might oppose him.
