The news that former Vice President Kamala Harris will not look to run for governor in California in 2026 is not a great surprise among the states political class.
Harris nodded toward another possible presidential run in 2028, but shes currently running second in the most recent Emerson College polling, behind Gov. Gavin Newsom, and only slightly ahead of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. For now, Harriss career may veer toward lowkey pursuits. Shes only 60, after all, and theres still time for her to step back into the political spotlight.
Porter has access to a national donor base that will undoubtedly ignite with the news that Harris is out. Further, a lot of donor class fence-sitters can now commit. Porter also generates excitement amongst young voters, and that simply cannot be said of the others yet.
It may be a bit tricky for Porter to maintain her populist street cred as she lines up financial backers, but shes still a compelling potential governor. A truly gifted speaker, as her legendary white board presentations attest, she has genuine charisma.

(3,909 posts)If Vance was also struck down. After the new congress makes Hakeem Jeffries (or whatever Democrat) Speaker of the House. Hey, the Speaker doesnt have to be a House member. We could make it Hillary or Kamala. Or even Bernie. Haha.

(3,909 posts)Texas has had 2. Which is surprising also. Miriam "Ma" Ferguson (https://www.humanitiestexas.org/programs/tx-originals/list/miriam-ma-ferguson#:~:text=Miriam%20%22Ma%22%20Ferguson%20(%20Miriam%20Amanda%20Wallace,Ann%20Richards%20as%20its%20second%20woman%20governor.
And of course Ann Richards. (https://texaspolitics.utexas.edu/archive/html/exec/governors/31.html )

(155,191 posts)I was very pleased to read that Kamala has decided against running for governor.
That move puts wind in Katie's sails, big time!

(20,851 posts)The current Lieutenant Governor and the former speaker of the assembly.
Both have garnered a bunch of endorsements from various state Dems, Katie currently has none.
Dont know about how their campaign cash compares.
Katie will need all the grass roots support she can get, because she doesnt take PAC cash, and Im assuming the tech bros arent going to back her.
Remember, California has a jungle primary, so all Katie has to do is come in second to make it to the general,

(20,851 posts)As far as votes, Im not so sure how big of an impact it will have.
Katie Getting endorsements from major progressives, both in CA and nationally (like AOC) could help.

California has a jungle primary - it's possible that next year will see two Dems running against each other.
Nixie
(17,848 posts)I was surprised at the very low percentages she got.
Her tenure at her last Congress rep position was spotty, as it was reported she really alienated people from employees to colleagues. She did win that conservative district in Orange County which is a significant feat, but her political instincts werent the best in office.
Ill hold off on crowning her just yet. Hopefully she will not make this about empty attacks on other Democrats.

(56,770 posts)Katie Porter's money dried up. All the donors went with Schiff. Porter has a good chance at the donors this time around.

(536 posts)California is an insanely expensive media market. "Donations:" (bribes) from the tech bros and AIPAC are going to go a long ways in this race.
Nixie
(17,848 posts)ran her campaign, not really endorsements. She alienated lot of people by choosing to accuse others of being corrupt. Lets hope she doesnt make the same mistakes, but you can already tell her same band is warming up by the comments about fundraising in the thread.
Katie has a lot of baggage, both personally and professionally. She received very mild treatment the last time during a statewide election, all while trashing other Democrats. The election results showed how much she miscalculated the electorate.

(17,848 posts)Calling Schiff corrupt was so insane. It was such a turnoff and poor choice, especially when she had so much actual personal and professional baggage that others didnt use against her.

(56,770 posts)I think Katie Porter knows she flubbed her Senate campaign by attacking fellow Dems, and has changed her tone. This time she is reserving her criticisms for Trump, at least for now. She may not need to attack the other Dems running. A March poll that excluded Harris showed Porter with a 28-point lead, leading across audiences and party lines. The poll of Democrats and No Party Preference primary voters shows her winning a commanding 36 points, with all other announced or likely Democratic candidates polling in single digits. https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:5b318f9d-9976-4f88-8c25-77b1e11141e2
