US ends tariff exemption for all low-value packages

Wed, July 30, 2025 at 2:13 PM EDT 1 min read

(Reuters) -The United States is suspending a "de minimis" exemption that allowed low-value commercial shipments to be shipped to the United States without facing tariffs, the White House said on Wednesday.

Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, packages valued at or under $800 sent to the U.S. outside of the international postal network will now face "all applicable duties" starting August 29, the White House said.

Trump earlier targeted packages from China and Hong Kong, and the White House said the recently signed tax and spending bill repealed the legal basis for the de minimis exemption worldwide starting on July 1, 2027.

"Trump is acting more quickly to suspend the de minimis exemption than the OBBBA requires, to deal with national emergencies and save American lives and businesses now," the White House said in a fact sheet, referring to the bill known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Was being abused by my competitors. I'm glad to see this go away actually.

They were having their suppliers move the cost of goods over a decimal point on the Commercial Invoice (used at entry for valuation declaration to CBP) then they would issue the Invoice for payment at full cost.

People working remotely rurally selling items online, but, you know, these aren't Trumps people.

I think most of these people are already driven out of business.

This really petty decision is going to impact small and very small businesses--including even sellers and buyers on Ebay, third party sellers on the major platforms too.

It is only SB shipping to the USA that will be affected by these tariffs. I still disagree with Trump's silly tariffs though.

Especially for small specialty items, and then repackage and sell them individually.

I've also bought bags of pill bottles for hobbies.

The mascara tubes are for hair dye, to get small areas that I miss. I dye my own hair.
