And I daresay that there are a lot of hands-on training that's still needed for years in quite a few disciplines, the medical field, dental, etc.).

While I am the first to point out that the current ROI on a college degree is negative, it's still the only way to access huge segments of the job market.

I have friends who are as qualified as I am at what do but have a GED instead of BA/BS and, as such, have always been hindered in the job market.
