MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk argued that young people should skip college because they could get "the same wisdom and the same teaching" by watching YouTube videos and listening to Joe Rogan's podcast.
While hosting Fox & Friends on Sunday, Rachel Campos-Duffy noted that Kirk had been able to quote Aristotle, despite not attending college.
"So what is it that kids who don't go to college, how are they going to get that kind of, what did you do to get that kind of education?" she wondered.
"You could be autodidactic, which is to be self-taught," Kirk replied before promoting his business relationship with Hillsdale College, a Christian school offering free online courses.

Yeah, sure. And lots of people are self-educated, but more just don't have the time or the will for it.

(5,771 posts)are often the same ones proudly declaring, "We never learned that in school", as if their own ignorance and months of skipped classes is the school's fault. I think I can see why anti-vaxxers are so annoying these days... hubris is trending.

(25,717 posts)indeed, teachable moments, and I don't know enough about Joe R's podcast to determine if it's teachable or not (I kind of doubt it, his videos aren't like 'This old house' videos or the like). And I daresay that there are a lot of hands-on training that's still needed for years in quite a few disciplines, the medical field, dental, etc.).
Let's just say that I wouldn't want to be operated on by someone who solely got their education from YouTube if I needed some sort of critical operation.
Some people are just so, eh, out of it in these recommendations and what the sad thing about it is that some will listen.
This is what I call dangerous talk online, that should be banned or gone after by the FCC, not some of the BS that tRUMP and others are harping about some in the democratic world (Going after Obama, etc.).

(558 posts)While I am the first to point out that the current ROI on a college degree is negative, it's still the only way to access huge segments of the job market.
I have friends who are as qualified as I am at what do but have a GED instead of BA/BS and, as such, have always been hindered in the job market.
