I think his broad support in red strongholds "normalized" him in those places. A percentage -- perhaps a significant percentage -- got on the bandwagon because they perceived that "everyone" supported him. The mix of self-inflicted damage (every 47 regime action appears be sabotage that is already being felt) and the visibility of hands off/no kings/good trouble protests everywhere, even in front of red rural city and county buildings, challenging the "everyone supports him" notion is chipping away at those who haven't actually invested much of their identity in being MAGA.

His approval among self-identified Republicans remains pretty strong, but I have my fingers crossed that we'll see that dropping too. As well-defended as they are against allowing any negative thoughts about 47 to gain a foothold, I think doubts have been brewing. Once you let one get a foothold -- like questions about why the reversal on Epstein -- others are able to gain purchase. Add that to hearing bits of 47 negativity from a small, but clearly present, number of people in the community -- people who used to be "on board" -- and that opens a door too.

Regardless of any individual private misgivings some *might* have, in practice Republicans en masse are Trump's lapdogs, apologists, enablers, minions, and rubber-stampers. At best, they sit on their hands and let him do whatever he wants; at worst, they are his direct accomplices.

The useful idiots have already served their purpose. He casts them aside like he does with anyone that finds fault with him. This is simply a case of "damage done".

...on the website to see if I could find a rationale for the issues tracked. I suspect it may be issues Trump was perceived as strong on (and climate would certainly not be on that list) but haven't found details yet:

That's the rub. We need huge trunout in an off-year election cycle for Dems. Will Indies vote for them in lieu of Repubs or just stay home?

Given what is going down we should expect a landside legislature flip next year. Hard to see it happening with all the shit Repubs are doing.

We still have work to do.

Democrats have been hoping that a voter backlash against the president will be powerful enough to restore their majority in the House in next year’s midterm elections, much as it did during Trump’s first term. But the Journal poll shows that the party hasn’t yet accomplished a needed first step in that plan: persuading voters they can do a better job than Trump’s party.

On the whole, voters disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy, inflation, tariffs and foreign policy. And yet in each case, the new Journal poll found, voters nonetheless say they trust Republicans rather than Democrats to handle those same issues in Congress.
