A retired Omaha eye surgeon wants to translate his experience helping patients to serving the residents of Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District.

Mark Johnston, 69, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat that retiring Rep. Don Bacon holds.

Johnston said he honed his ability to connect with patients over his 20 years of owning and operating a surgery center. During refractive surgery, the patient is awake and Johnston said he'd carry on conversation as he worked. In those surgeries, he learned about the lives of people from across Nebraska, from 4H and corn prices to problems at their jobs and concerns with inflation.

Meanwhile, he also volunteered for Democratic congressional and presidential campaigns and said, "I've been finding, over a number of campaigns in a number of years, that the Democratic Party is not able to connect with as broad a base as it needs to."

The Cook Political Report calls the race in the 2nd District a lean left, making it a likely candidate for big spending as the GOP attempts to maintain or bolster its small majority, and Democrats try to take back control.
