I learned a tough lesson tonight

You know that saying that goes something like, "Don't ask questions if you might not be able to live with the answers you get"?

I was swept up in a reorganization at work, and have a new manager. Curious to learn more about them, in a moment of absolute idiocy, I decided to look up their possible campaign contributions on the FEC website to get a sense of what kind of person they might be, and- oh my gosh. Thousands and thousands of dollars over the last 10 years to Trump, MAGA endorsed PACs, MAGA candidates.... groups and people who are vocally against people like me and my loved ones.

I feel sick. I shouldn't have looked that up. I don't know how I am going to work for this person.

…what they do at work, how they treat people, etc.

I’ve never known the politic leanings of anyone I work for, because being federal employees, we didn’t discuss politics at work.

So long as their personal political beliefs aren’t pushed at work, and as long as they treat people well and fairly, it shouldn’t matter.

if they push magat stuff.

I seriously doubt they will be high minded enough to be a fair manager.

I really don’t care what someone else’s political beliefs are, so long as they’re not pushing them on me.

Politics are important, no doubt, but my political beliefs are just part of who I am as a person, not the primary component of my existence.

and you can't evaluate or assess based on yourself. You have to look at that other person independently. Just because you're fair doesn't mean they are.

But hey, maybe you're right. Maybe there's a magat out there who is decent enough to be fair on the job. If there is, I'd be surprised.

Almost all ex Navy and all they did was discuss politics. Soon as they found out that you don't agree with them. They went out of their way to give every nasty job. They acted and treated people horribly who didn't have their politics so they make them quit. If stand up for yourself was usually met with being called in subordinate and threatened or fired.

Actually, when something similar happened to me, I started to make plans to bail out; got certified in another similar field and waited until I could retire early to keep their insurance and pension and got out of that place.

This might not apply to you, but you have to start thinking about alternatives if (and when) working with these magats becomes unbearable.

In my experience, it is too hard to change them. Yes, you can, a little at a time, but in no time at all, they backslide. It's tedious.

But Propaganda, Religion, "Tradition", or just plain Cynicism blindsided them, despite the amount of education they've had over the years, or how "fair" they pretend to be.

I don't care how much they claim to respect me or my work, or how much they think they like me, they're still dumb shits I wouldn't trust not to get me killed or arrested if their "Conservative Tradition" puts a big target on my back for being a Democrat or just logical.

You are not obligated to give your employer one little bit of anything beyond the job description you accepted.
You don’t have to love them or even like them.
You don’t have to respect them. Respect is earned.
You don’t have to let then live in your head once you walk out that door.
You don’t have to stay. You also don’t have to leave unless you are ready and you want to.

Your responsiblity is to yourself and your loved ones, not them. So please, whatever you do, take good care of yourself.

I don't talk politics at work whatsoever, no matter who or what they may say and that I may or may not agree with..

I am there to work, and then go home, not proselytize nor be proselytized to.

11. Depends on how high up this person is, in considering how to weigh it

Reality is that the right wing has a lock on PAC donations in C-suites especially in certain industries.
Maybe you’re an engineer at an oil company, an accountant at a coal mine, a supply person at U-line, a technician at SpaceX.
Do you think the executives at those companies dare to say no to requests from their boss to donate to a PAC that is looking out for the interests of the company?
It’s awful, but it is reality.
You can assume that they should immediately quit, but these things are insidious. And not always obvious from the start.

for checking into it. Forewarned is forearmed. It was the smart thing to do.

I would do everything in my power to get away from these people. You have a head start. Use it!

I’m not exactly sure how, but we know that Trump is a petty and vindictive ass hole and while not all supporters are, a significant percentage of them are. Most of the time it’s driven by ego and bitterness in my experience, and oftentimes religion and race as well. It goes hand in hand.

I don’t know if you work in person or remote/hybrid. Maybe that may work better for you if that’s an option, if he makes you feel uncomfortable in any way.

It’s best to keep things transactional, just as his dear leader does with all relationships. If transferring to another group is possible, consider that.

Just look out for yourself and know why you work. It’s to collect a paycheck. That’s it.

It may be inconvenient, but it’s impossible to be dishonest. Attempting to explain it to someone else may clarify your thinking.
