Class act and good human. Great loss at a relatively young age. Rest in peace Malcolm.

When it was released, I'd just moved from Detroit to the Twin Cities for a real job. I remember listening to it for the first time at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.

He was bushed from playing a concert earlier, but was still gracious enough to sit in with us and play a tune when we asked him.

Nice guy, and funny too.

Here he is early on playing some bebop with Art Blakey and a 21 year old Keith Jarrett.

What a terrible week for musicians.

Aside from his more iconic songs, I definitely fell in love with his "Children of Sanchez" album.

But it was already some years ago when he started wanting to discuss his last wishes. At his funeral he wants life-affirming music. He likes a very broad spectrum on music, so his choices include Georg Philippe Telemann and Jose Carreras. But he wants the final piece - he last word - to be Mangione's "Give It All You've Got." (I have made a file of mp3s and also burned a CD.) Thank you, Chuck.
