Commanders fans have pointed response for Trump on team name change

WASHINGTON — D.C.-area residents have a message for President Donald Trump who is threatening to derail the Commanders' pending football stadium deal unless the team restores its old name: Stay out of the city's business and do your job.

Trump posted on Truth Social on July 20 that he may block a deal for the team to build a new stadium on the old RFK Stadium site if the team doesn't switch back to its former name, considered offensive to Native Americans.

"I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump posted.

Steve Mahoney, 62, said Trump has “bigger fish to fry” than pressuring the Commanders to change the team name. “Focus on lowering prices, everything else that he said he was going to do that he's not doing,” he said.

Yes, we can say that this year because the stench of Daniel Snyder and his cheerleader scandal and all the suckiness of the final years of the R.. S….. are behind us. Those horrid years destroyed the legacy of the 1980s. We needed a new beginning. It’s not just the racist name. There’s a whole lot we’ve put behind us. Trump’s too stupid to know.

They were the last NFL franchise to integrate — in 1962. First owner, George Preston Marshall, changed the name of the team from the Braves to the Redskins after one year. Braves apparently wasn’t racist enough.He was quoted as saying he would hire black players when the Harlem Globetrotters hired whites. The team didn’t integrate until the Kennedy administration threaten federal retribution.

Going back to the old team name would dredge all of that up, again.

Should change their name to the Orange Skins in honor of the oversized oompa loompa in the White House.
