Is it inconceivable that this will snowball into an on-air movement?! Will Paramount put up with it?

If Colbert had been cancelled to appease Trump, he would not still be on for another ten months. I have no doubt that Colbert and his staff believe this story, but the fact is that late night TV has lost much of its audience from even just 5 years ago. Seth Myers only has 4 new shows a week. Conan O'Brien's show went from one hour to a half hour only to be cancelled last year. When shows cease being profitable, the end is near. I'm sure all of this will be great for the show's ratings, though and when the show ends in ten months Colbert will have lined up a fat new deal with another network.

Which he has through the end of the announced period. This cancellation is a non-renewal of the contract.

CBS/Paramount was probably well-advised by counsel that violating that contract would be sufficient grounds for a lawsuit that likely would have fucked their merger plans just a bit.

Many shows have been cancelled before all of the contracted episodes were made - they simply pay off everyone with a contract for the remaining contracted unmade episodes.

...assuming Cobert would be the host. Plus, the optics of removing him now would be brand damaging beyond any monetary advantage. It already is.

Not sure what to think of his perspective. He said Colbert is not being fired because of what's his name. He said if he was, Colbert would not be kept on until - I forget, is it November or October? He used one of his own firings to back up this example. I thought Colbert was immediately gone. If he truly is staying for months, it feels like it is not the orange one doing it. He would want Colbert gone at once.

The part I definitely did not agree with was when he said late night talk shows are going away. From what I have heard, Colbert's show is strongest in ratings of all the late night talk shows. Why not fire the weakest first and see if that audience joins the strongest show?

With my brain injury, I am never sure what to think. It feels like maybe he has a point? Has anyone listened to that episode, or is what Keith is saying make sense?
