Theyre happy to take our money and hate everything else about us, read one post in the Los Angeles subreddit with over 7,500 upvotes. In the thread, people chimed in about the hypocrisy of a billionaire fast food company heiress complaining about hardship. Must have been soooo hard to live as a billionaire in California, thoughts and prayers for her through this difficult time, read one popular, sarcastic comment in another Reddit thread.
Some people on Reddit, Instagram and Threads went as far as to suggest a boycott of In-N-Out. In the comments of In-N-Outs most recent Instagram post, a few shared a #boycottinnout tag. Theres too many good burgers in Los Angeles to go to a fast food chain like In-n-Out where the owner openly says they hate California, read one Los Angeles Reddit thread with 2,400 upvotes. One video on TikTok calling for a boycott (and calling Snyder a nepo baby in the process) has racked up over 112,000 likes.
More than anything, California fans of the burger chain seemed to see Snyders comment as a betrayal of the state that built her business.
California has treated their family and their business very, very well, read one Reddit comment. This is simply ungrateful and shameful. On X, San Francisco account Oracle Park Seagull had one of the most popular posts on the topic with 23,000 likes: Not easy for In N Out to do business in California
Said the person who became a billionaire doing business almost exclusively in California. So much so, it was a point of pride for the chain. Gotcha.

(2,852 posts)We have them in Texas. In my opinion, overrated. There are a lot of good local burger places especially in the larger cities and no reason at all to
patronize greasy in-n-out.

(14,407 posts)I've read several articles, she's not happy with the "socialist" policies and wants to ensure her kids aren't exposed to the liberal agenda - they can't be allowed to grow up to question Mommie Dearest or her Church of Choice, and California won't accredit the type of schools she wants her kids to go to.
She's unlike her parents, who were extremely religious, but also tried to walk the walk and help kids rise out of poverty - and they still made millions.

(36,981 posts)She's not closing In N Outs in Calif. That minimum wage stays the same.
And if she opens storefronts in TN with HQ remaining in Calif., she still has the base of TN minimum wage for those storefronts in TN. Calif. doesn't dictate TN law for franchises.
Note that "minimum wage" is the actual wage for a very small fraction of employees. Even those working "minimum wage jobs". Ten years ago my high-school students working fast-food were starting at $11/hr. Not minimum wage.
In TX the minimum wage is $7.25. But https://www.indeed.com/cmp/In--n--out-Burger/salaries?location=US%2FTX notes that In-N-Out has starting wages for "store associates" (that's the counter clerks) in Houston as $17.50. Higher in Austin.
Moving the HQ just affects things like state corporate tax and reporting requirements for the corporation. The franchises in Cali have all the same requirements because they're in Cali. (Note that one thing that Calif. does is charge corporate income tax for *all* corporate earnings--if their rate is 8.8% and TN charges 6.5%, then California requires that 8.8 - 6.5 or 2.3% of gross income *from TN operations* be paid to Sacramento. Move HQ to TN and TN don't care about income from other states, because the other states charge that.

(14,407 posts)The workers became vested after a year, so if they worked out, the wage was typically raised to double minimum wage after a year.
They had full benefits, medical, dental, "company stock", and education.
Managers were hired from within on merit. They did not discriminate, and made reasonable accomodations (stools, adjustable station heights) for employees.
Yah, her parents may have been Christian and probably cold war anti-Communist types, but they were ahead of the curve when it came to taking care of their workforce and valuing labor as a more important part of their business than shopping around for investors.
Even when fast food workers were given raises to $20 an hour to start, In and Out could still easily afford to start their employees at $25, due to the bare bones nature of their menu.
The problem isn't doing business in California. The problem is a selfish Holier than Thou Nepo- baby who is pissed she can't own her own county and isolate herself from the real world and "those people".

(1,200 posts)insane tariffs policies will put I-N-Out out of business. They are leaving California because even Californians can't afford to pay their high prices for their shitty hamburgers. In Los Angeles County, an In-N-Out Double-Double combo (including fries and a drink) costs $11.44. It wasn't that long ago that $3 bucks got you this same deal.

(11,646 posts)They'll still do business in CA, but simply dodge taxes by "relocating" corporate HQ to Tennessee.
Tesla did the same thing. They didn't leave California. They still have plenty of people here, but HQ is in Texas.

(11,646 posts)She enjoyed our world-class economy to build her business before leaving for a non-income tax state (that Califonia's tax dollars help support.)
So, yeah, no more double doubles for me. Plenty of great burgers in LA.

(1,954 posts)California forces companies do what theyre should do without asking. But most companies are dont ask for permission, just do whatever you want, then ask for forgiveness. The thicket of planning, permits, and permissions are required to rein in the many, many bad actors. Good people bear the burden. Thanks assholes.

Havent eaten one of their burgers in years because of it. I was in one during the first reign of terror of the orange Hitler and saw a framed picture of him in the burger joint. I walked out and brought my food elsewhere.

(7,081 posts)When the lions share of your business is in California, its going to hurt like hell when you piss them off. She'll probably still move to TN but keep the HQ in Baldwin Park and Irvine. Maybe just open a "satellite office" in TN to oversee expansion.

(826 posts)Imagine how hard it is to live in a "Right (!) To Work" State.
In California we have Elected people to our government to work to improve the conditions for People to live better lives. Sometimes there are conflicts between the needs of the People and the Business Community. California is an attractive environment for Business, as the economy is alive with consumers and a robust labor pool.
Republican Business owners have declared war on California. The Oil Industry is closing refineries to punish California for passing legislation aimed at trying to come to grips with the issues surrounding Climate and Fossil Fuels.
I once had a mentor who told me it's important to consider the motivations of your detractors. California needs businesses that are part of the community, that makes a contribution to better lives, rather than taking their money and running.

(19,164 posts)Warning, a bit raunchy. No reflection on In And Out, but the thought of "in and out" kind of grosses me out.
Before you accuse me of naughty thoughts, first pass this " Do You Have a Dirty Mind?" test.

P.S. I detest fast food. I worked at McDonalds about this time (below) and I never went back.
