(25,707 posts)Apologies.
Any thoughts on the racism?
Or did you only read the op title?

(126,066 posts)I clicked on the link only because of the use of the word "authoress."

(67,249 posts)There's no need to call people poetesses, authoresses, actresses, stewardesses, waitresses, or any of the other silly terms that imply that women are less than the standard.

(25,334 posts)Despite having legitimate access to the area through special VIP cards, Toni faced escalating harassment that culminated in the female aggressor implying she had exchanged sexual favors for her cruise tickets. I was in so much shock, Toni explained in her video, describing how she refused to give her harassers the satisfaction of an emotional reaction despite the humiliation they attempted to inflict.
The confrontation began innocuously when an older man photobombed a picture Tonis mother was taking of her. Shortly after, the man approached Toni and questioned how she gained access to the VIP area despite staff confirming she had proper authorization. The situation escalated when the couple realized complaints to staff wouldnt result in Tonis removal from the area.
Toni described how the couple, whom she called Chuck and Stephanie from Alberta, Canada, attempted to provoke a reaction from her that might justify her removal. When Toni entered the hot tub where they were sitting, the woman deliberately kicked water into her face while the couple laughed. They explicitly questioned how a Black woman could have legitimately accessed the VIP area.

(4,815 posts)There is zero reason ever to diminish womens importance by adding the -ess diminutive to their professional title.

(73,636 posts)I completely agree that adding the "-ess" is archaic & unnecessary.
Nobody calls Gretchen Whitmer "Governess". She's called "Governor".
Nobody called Jane Byrne "Mayoress". They called her "Mayor".
Where we disagree is that it's diminutive.
Doggie is a diminutive of dog. Kitty is a diminutive of cat.
Authoress is gender specific (needlessly) but not diminutive.

(25,707 posts)Usually if a term is deprecating, the dictionary will define it as such.
Still, I have no desire to offend anyone here, so I corrected it and will not use it.

(126,066 posts)to indicate the female exception to some jobs or statuses, e.g., author, actor, host, waiter, steward, poet, comedian. To indicate the female exception, the suffix "ess" (sometimes "enne" or "ine", e.g., "heroine," "comedienne" ) was used but is now discouraged as sexist.

(5,903 posts)the write up did state the male creep began the harassment by intentionally trying to spoil photos her Mom was taking of her.
If anything, it was they who should've been removed for the harassment.
She should sue the cruise liner, if for no other reason than to obtain identifying information (via discovery) so the rest of the world can learn who these cretins are.
They didn't mind trying to embarrass, disparage her. Return the favour.
