(53,030 posts)I am not saying I am sure Colbert can, but something is better than nothing. I also do think Colbert would likely be a good senator just like Franken was.

(53,030 posts)then I would agree. But he is likely the best candidate we could get in SC. He is famous enough that he wouldn't need massive funding and could likely self fund to the extent he needed money if he chose. I don't think a single Democratic dollar should go to a senate race in SC and I sure wouldn't be donating my money to it. But if he chose to run making the GOP spend time and money on that race, good for him. If he managed to win, then great for him. As to what I would want from his as a senator is vote for the leader and not be our next Sinema or Fetterman. I think he would manage that.

(37,329 posts)It is about our tendency to assume that someone who is a flashy lawyer who worked for someone willing to call Trump out would be a good president (Michael Avenatti), or someone who is a genuinely good person but with little to no interest in holding office (Michelle Obama) would be a good president (or Supreme Court justice), or - in this case - a comedian/political commentator - would make a good senator (or would have any interest in it).
Not the only examples. It happens on a regular basis here.

(3,114 posts)Respectfully, it's a shiny bauble to imply Graham is competent at any level other than being a human weather vane. If you've ever watched Colbert's monologue's and interviews, the man and his team are not idiots by a long shot. There's a message there that resonates. He's not just a smart ass like a Jimmy Fallon, he's who a Seth Meyers is afraid to be (who's also smarter than 60% of the Senate).
My point was the man is certainly capable and intelligent enough to do the job if he would so chose (which I highly doubt he'd put his family through the DC wringer). Certainly more intelligent than the slimeball they currently have and saying otherwise is just well, BS. And Colbert is a lot more popular than you may think in SC. I truly believe he could wipe the floor with Lindseed in his home state.
I don't think I'm grasping at straws with this thought experiment on any level.
And yes, tossing a celebrity out there in the political field just because they are popular doesn't work... or does it? I don't know, I never watched The Apprentice

(37,329 posts)In case you don't recall, because of his role with Stormy Daniels, there were quite a few people here suggesting he should be our next presidential candidate.
Michelle Obama has been suggested for president and supreme court justice - when she has been pretty clear she is interested in neither
I don't even recall the others that keep popping up as the best option for our next XYZ candidate, solely because they are in the news or are good at what they are doing.
We have a history on DU of trying to put whoever is in the news on our side of the issues in line for the next political opening. That isn't to say that none of them are suitable, or that none of them are interested in the position. They may be. But suggesting that someone who is in the news in a positive way, but who has not expressed any interest in a particular role (or whose personality suggests he is more Trump-like than presidential) isn't the way to go about it.
