Gallegos was $10 million in donations from crypto PACs.

Freshman Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego was recently named the top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committees new subcommittee on digital assets, which will oversee cryptocurrencies. On the heels of that appointment, Gallego will hold a ritzy donor retreat alongside one of the crypto industrys biggest cheerleaders and investors, Marc Andreessen.
...
Rolling Stone reached out to Gallego to ask if the senator thought it was appropriate to hold a fundraising retreat with one of the major funders of a pro-crypto Super PAC while also serving as ranking member on the Senate subcommittee overseeing the industry; the senator declined to comment. (Andreessen Horowitz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)
Andreessen actively advised Donald Trump as he assembled his new pro-crypto administration. (Speaking on Bari Weiss podcast in December, Andreessen said hed been spending half his time at Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort. Ive been trying to help in as many ways as I can, he said.) His VC firm recently drew headlines for hiring ex-marine Daniel Penny, who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide last year after he was filmed choking a homeless man to death on a New York City subway.
A crypto industry Super PAC called Protect Progress spent $10 million boosting Gallegos 2024 Senate campaign. Protect Progress and its parent organization, Fairshake, received $138 million last election cycle from Andreessen, co-founder Ben Horowitz, and their firm, which has invested in crypto for years and lobbies extensively on crypto issues.

(1,151 posts)At first glance it seems that regulating the crypto market could generally make things better and make it easier to track funds being used for criminal purposes. Right?

(104,139 posts)And a basic test is: is Trump in favour? If so, it's bad.
For example, they said it would deepen tech firms' participation in bank-like activities without subjecting them to similar oversight, and leave customers hanging in a convoluted bankruptcy process in the event that a stablecoin firm should fail.
They had also tried to rally opposition to the bill by arguing that voting in favour was effectively condoning Trump's business activities - including his family's promotion of their own crypto coins.
...
"Some members may believe passage of this bill, even with flaws, is better than the status quo. We believe this is a fundamental misunderstanding of the risks involved with these instruments," a coalition of consumer and advocacy groups wrote in a letter to Congress this spring.
They warned that passage would "allow the proliferation of assets that consumers will wrongly perceive as safe".
