Trump doesn't realize why MAGA needs the Epstein files

Trump doesn’t realize why MAGA needs the Epstein files
His base needs a story where they're the heroes, not the villains

(Salon) On Saturday, Donald Trump tried to wave the MAGA base off the growing clamor to release the full case file of infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, a close friend of Trump’s who evaded trial in 2019 by killing himself in jail. The president’s intervention seemed to reveal that he’s deeply worried there’s embarrassing or incriminating evidence about him in the Justice Department’s files. The furor, he insisted, is being driven by “selfish people” who are trying to hurt him. He said the files must be fabricated “by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration.” Trump’s tirade made it impossible to escape the conclusion that he’s trying to dissuade his voters from believing any damning evidence that may come out.

What was also telling in this defensive screed is how perplexed Trump is over his base’s fixation on this case. He begs them to move on to other conspiracy theories, offering a full menu of alternatives, like JFK’s assassination, Hunter Biden’s laptop and, his personal favorite, the “Rigged and Stolen Election of 2020.” “Let’s keep it that way, and not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about,” he pleaded with his supporters, as if saying that no one cares about Epstein will somehow make it true.

....(snip)....

The president’s confusion over why this matters to his base is understandable. MAGA voters have made it abundantly clear that they do not care about sexual abuse. They didn’t care when a tape of Trump bragging about sexual assault was released in 2016. They didn’t care when he was found liable for sexual assault by a civil jury in 2023. They don’t mind that Trump goes out of his way to associate with men accused of sex crimes, from Epstein to Vince McMahon to Pete Hegseth to Matt Gaetz and numerous others. For Trump, this has to be bewildering. His supporters do not treat sexual violence like it’s a bad thing. So why do they care about Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, or the identities of his alleged co-conspirators?

....(snip)....

The Esptein conspiracy theory is a coping mechanism for people enduring this cognitive dissonance. Yes, a civil jury found that Trump assaulted journalist E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room. But if Trump voters tell each other Bill Clinton is on the mythical “Epstein client list” and is about to be arrested for pedophilia, they can believe Democrats are worse. Yes, Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy keeps promoting anti-vaccine conspiracies that lead to children dying of preventable diseases. But the fantasy that Bill Gates is a child molester allows them to say they’re the ones who are protecting kids. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem undermined efforts to help after a flood wiped out a Texas summer camp, but by clamoring for the “Epstein files,” MAGA can pretend they’re the champions of young girls. ..................(more)

1. "They are his accomplices"

In all this back-and-forth, most MAGA voters are on the wrong side of history. They side with the rapists and harassers, and denounce the feminists who are trying to bring perpetrators to justice. Even as more stories of Trump’s abusive behavior toward women come to light, they keep voting for him. They’re invested in preserving sexist systems of power.

But you can’t be a warrior for rape culture day in and day out without starting to ask yourself, “Am I the baddie?” That’s where Epstein and his imaginary client list come in. By hating on Epstein and fantasizing about political enemies being on the “list,” MAGA gets to play at being the heroes for once. Better yet, they can do so without the risk of bringing actual predators to justice, a precedent they don’t want to establish lest it come for their leaders. After all, Epstein is dead, and his “list” only existed in their fevered imaginations.

Or least, that felt true until Trump started visibly panicking about the Epstein files. But giving up on the Epstein case now that Trump is drenched in flop sweat would amount to MAGA admitting they never cared about pedophiles or justice for victims — that it was always just a fairy tale they told to conceal the ugly truth about themselves, even to themselves.

Trump thought nothing would get in the way of his base’s loyalty to him. But it may be that the one thing that will rattle their faith is this stark reminder that he’s always been the villain, and they are his accomplices.

2. I'm not convinced the current MAGA uproar over the release of the Epstein files is a genuine grassroots phenomenon.

It appears manufactured, an astroturfed outrage created by certain MAGA factions with an (as yet) unclear agenda.

Up to now the MAGA movement has been under Trump's complete control; he's used MAGA as a club to keep the Republican party in constant fear. I suspect certain people are trying to splinter the MAGA movement and break Trump's stranglehold on the GOP.

This Salon article talks as if there is some deep reasoning going on at the grass roots of MAGA. Nonsense. Complete poppycock. The grass roots MAGA people are thick as bricks. The only way they take this position directly opposed to Trump is with lots of internal agitation - propaganda.

Salon ought to be looking into who is driving the MAGA base, because we are clearly seeing a big shift here. I don't know who is doing it, but I would start with Musk, who has every reason to push Trump off the scene. Putin also could be done with Trump at this point. And people like Theil and Leo were never Trump people in the first place. So somewhere in that gang, I think you will find the source of this Epstein push.

that all Democrats are sub-human, are baby eaters, are pedophiles.

Pizza Gate which didn't even have a basement. Epstein and the Clintons.

Killing the Epstein files ruins the lies about Democrats being pedophiles, and makes Congressional Magats/Krasnov, look like the liars. Unwashed Magats are pissed that they may have been lied to.

MAGA influenceers make big $$$ off of the MAGA faithful by dangling the prospect of prominent Dems being exposed by the files.
They extract big donations from their followers by insisting that only big name democratic politicians and Hollywood entertainers will be exposed by publishing the files.
The fact that Agolf $hitler is taking away their promised 'treat', has really angered the MAGAt base and it threatens the income of the influncers. And, last but not least, it feeds the suspicion that their orange god has decieved them, either because Eloon Muskrat is right, and DJT is in the files, or they've been played because the whole thing was a hoax to get their votes and $$$.

Thanks for the post...

Speaking from my experience with a former friend (the friendship ended in 2020 because of her fierce belief in QAnon), a significant number of these people believe that "Prominent Democrats" and "the Hollywood Elite" are the ones involved and 45 was supposed to bust this wide open and start arresting the pedos.

I think most of us know what the QAnon crowd believes and it's batsh** crazy! Having said that, the Epstein situation was completely real. These are conflated and I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up.

They really think the Clintons, Gates, and people like Tom Hanks are blood sucking monsters and pedos........believing that babies and small children are/were being drained of their blood for Adrenochrome.

16. Why the Epstein Files Matter More to MAGA's Narrative Than to Justice
Wed Jul 16, 2025, 01:48 AM
Jul 16

Amanda Marcotte hits a critical nerve here—not just about Trump’s nervous deflection, but about the psychological function conspiracy theories serve within MAGA culture. The Epstein case has become a Rorschach test for ideological projection. Trump supporters, who have long ignored or justified a mountain of sexual abuse allegations against their leader, are suddenly obsessed with "protecting children"—but only when it’s someone else being accused.

What Marcotte gets right is that this isn’t about justice or concern for victims. It’s about narrative control. If the Epstein files can be weaponized against Democrats or the "liberal elite," MAGA wins the moral high ground in their minds—no matter what Trump himself may be guilty of. It’s not about the facts; it’s about who gets to play the hero in a mythologized culture war.

Trump’s fear is obvious. He’s trying to steer the base away from a landmine that might blow up in his direction. But what he doesn’t grasp is that the movement he created has taken on a life of its own. They don’t want facts; they want villains. And if he ends up on the wrong side of that story—even briefly—they’ll either spin harder or start questioning him, both of which he sees as threats.

The tragic irony? Real victims of Epstein’s abuse continue to be used as pawns in a partisan spectacle. Justice isn’t the goal. Narrative dominance is.
