Holocaust inversion: The dangerous rhetoric equating Israel to Nazi Germany

Today, the State of Israel and Jews worldwide will pause to honor the six million Jewish men, women, and children murdered by the Germans and their collaborators during the Holocaust. In the wake of the destruction of European Jewry, the Jewish world vowed “never again.” Holocaust Remembrance Day requires us not just to remember the Jewish life that was destroyed, but to remain vigilant against modern expressions of murderous antisemitism.

Perversely, the Shoah, its memory, and imagery have become one of the most dangerous and painful tools wielded against the Jewish people and the State of Israel today.

Indeed, while outright Holocaust denial is confined mainly to the political fringes, the insidious phenomenon of Holocaust inversion has no such taboo. Such inversion accuses contemporary Jews of being the new Nazis, with the State of Israel serving as a new Third Reich committing genocide against the Palestinians. So common is this phenomenon that it has been included in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism.

The comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany is not made innocently. Rather, as the Nazis are the emblem of evil post-World War II, the comparison is the equivalent of medieval Catholic teachings equating Jews with the satanic and demonic. In this twisted revisionism, Palestinians and Islamist terrorist groups become “Jewish partisans,” effectively whitewashing and justifying their attacks on Israeli Jews. This sets the stage for legitimizing the murder of Israelis, who are recast as evil génocidaires. It also justifies the exclusion of Jews (rebranded as “Nazis”) from political and social groups based on supposed social justice or anti-racist principles.

to Jews.

They cleverly disguise it, “we aren’t against Jews, we are just against Israel and Zionism”, which they know exactly means the elimination of Israel.

The problem is you have hard core right wing Israeli's who wield and use the "antisemitic" club at anyone who dares to question their judgement, morals, etc. So much so, its lost its meaning. Now its "here they come again with their usual crutch". And when there is actual antisemitic behavior, it gets ignored because of how often that excuse is made. Hamas knows this and now have figured out to reverse the tables on them. Meanwhile, the hard right types don't understand why the usual arguements don't work. And yet, still keep using them as that is the only tool they have.

Plus with advent of social media, the hard core right wingers philosophy gets even more amplified. Ages ago I saw a doc on settlers in the West Bank, it featured one person who flat out said that Palestinians were not even human, just trash animals to be exterminated. They obviously didn't know that genetically they are related as they basically said the same thing about themselves. Nor is that representitive of the entire population, however, that's what people on the outside hear. And now with social media, these people get heard more often and they don't realize what they are saying is generating antisemitism around the world. In short, they have become thier own worst enemy.

And the hard core right is under delusions of granduer. They push out maps that show Israel under King David's reign and think that is what is owed to them. Problem is, one, all the other empires around them were in decline and it made it easy for him to absorb that territory. Two, King David's hold on the kingdom was always tenuous. He did get ousted once and a family member attempted a coup. Nor could he punish one of his top generals as he still needed him. I could go on, but it wasn't roses and rainbows as they like to think. But that's the bullshit they have been sold and they bought it. In fact, it has gotten so bad, that even Christians are assailed by the hard core right.

But certain political figures will continue fostering this as it guarantee's them a spot in the next election. Ultimately, Israel needs to finally bite the bullet and form a governmental Constitution that puts in checks and balances and limits the powers of some. Even the Russian Federation has a Constitution, granted its fast and loose, but, it does limit some things. And Israel has essentially nothing, yes they pass laws, but it can also revoke them. And so, you have the mess that is today.
