https://digbysblog.net/2025/04/23/nobody-could-have-seen-this-coming-2/The Trump administrations disturbing trend of ensnaring American citizens with its immigration crackdown has shown no signs of stopping, with the latest incident involving a 19-year-old whose family says he was held in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility for 10 days.
The White House is trying to beat back allegations surrounding its April arrest and detention of Jose Hermosillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico. As NBC News reported:
Immigration agents detained a U.S. citizen for 10 days after he was accused of illegally entering the United States while reportedly visiting Arizona this month, his family said.
But the Department of Homeland Security said Jose Hermosillos arrest was the direct result of Hermosillos own actions and statements. Hermosillo, 19, who lives in Albuquerque, was detained near Nogales, Arizona, on April 8, court documents say.
They allege that he illegally entered the country from Mexico and was found without the proper immigration documents.
Theres dispute over some of the basic facts in the case. The Trump administration said the arrest occurred after Hermosillo approached Border Patrol agents in Arizona and identified himself as a Mexican citizen who had entered the U.S. illegally, and the Department of Homeland Security posted what it says is a signed affidavit from Hermosillo that support its claims.
But according to Arizona Public Media, Hermosillos girlfriends aunt said that he did, in fact, say he was a U.S. citizen but they didnt believe him and that he probably wouldve been deported to Mexico if his family hadnt provided officials with his birth certificate and Social Security card. The Trump administration didnt immediately respond to MSNBCs request for comment.
I never understood why they voted for him in the first place. Its obvious that he has no respect for them, their culture or their countries. Stephen Miller is an outright Nazi. They were always going to go after law-abiding tax-paying people who are just trying to feed their families.

(14,136 posts)For the longest time, the American "Default", in media and for policy purposes, has been a successful White American Family, with attractive parents and one or two children between toddler and teenage.
The "Default" American in media and for policy/political purpose is a tall, athletic looking White 30-35 year old Male "Professional" with good hair. The alternative Default is a tall, successful or confident older looking White Male who can take charge in a pinch.
Most people, including the organizational entities they create, tend to react on visual stimulation. We see the situation and those involved with it, or we mentally picture the situation based on the words we see or hear, and we make the assumptions or judgements based on those visuals we see or think of...and there's an unspoken privilege that goes with being the Default.
If you don't look like you belong to the Default group, then it's going to be easier for others around you to assume you don't deserve the respect or rights -the services or benefits of preference or doubt - they would otherwise give to someone in your situation.
That's why in many professions that are typically dominated by a particular gender or culture, people are required to start out with a "blind" criteria for consideration - test scores, references of completed projects or training experience, objective performance metrics, example submissions - that are scrubbed for gender, race, culture, or "looks" before the hiring reviewer actually gets a name or sees the person, just to ensure there's no bias in at least the first selection pass.
But that Default citizen is what you're going to have to match up with or compete against against every time,so long as the Media and Political Will wants to keep the status quo. It's just easier for people and organizations to defer the "Default" view of a proper citizen.
...Whether it's in Business, Law, Politics Health Care, Finance...Policing...Privileges under the Law...Assumption of Innocence or Competence ...
And if you are not a Default US American citizen, but hang out with simplistic, "reach for the easiest solution" US Americans who like to send Leopards out to eat the faces of "Those People", who is to blame when that Leopard turns on you, hmmm?

(1,223 posts)and Asian criminals as well. Russian crime families have taken over most organized crime where I live. Now we see crime levels rising from Slavic neighborhoods. Gated communities are most vulnerable because these people allow white-skinned contractors easy access to their neighborhoods and homes, where as black, brown and other non-white crews are hardly ever hired or watched with the utmost suspicion.
The jewelry and money that goes missing is seldom reported and police reports are almost non-existent and mostly not filed if they do exist. Auto parts theft from high-end automobiles is one of the biggest crimes in these neighborhoods.
Folks will soon learn who really is a threat to them.

(14,136 posts)Each time it's been White, Middle Class Teens or young White Men in White, middle class neighborhoods.
Over 65 years, I've lived in a lot of locations - homes I've owned, homes I've rented, town-houses, apartments, military quarters, and twice "in between" residences (living out of a vehicle with my belongings in storage).
I've never had problems living in culturally diverse areas. It's always been in the more segregated neighborhoods where I've experienced problems. The sense of hierarchal or competitive privilege that occurs, especially in suburbs is really amplified, and for all their apparent pleasant conformity, there's sometimes a resentful edge, especially if the "community leadership" is run by selfish or weak asses.

Said there could be American citizens deported by mistake, but who cares it should be a very small number .

(3,258 posts)The sexism and racism were a huge part.
Plus 40 years of Catholic priests telling them Democrats are all baby killers who want to force abortions on people.
Plus, the racism if Cuban-american and Mexican-american people towards Central America is strong.

(85,955 posts)Actually, I reluctantly and minimally understand how people were taken in the FIRST time he won the White House (2016).
But it stops there!
There is NO EXCUSE for any "how could we have known?" or "I was SURE he'd have learned from the mistakes he made the first time, and that THIS time would be much better..." Yeah, BALONEY. And we'll be lucky if we're not all EATING bologna by the time he's through, this second round.
Meanwhile, I can proudly and honestly say "I didn't like him the first time," and "I didn't vote for him the first time" either.
