The New Baby Boom: How the White House is looking to jumpstart the nation's birth rate

Last edited Tue Apr 22, 2025, 08:33 PM - Edit history (1)

The Trump administration is reportedly fielding ideas for how to increase the declining U.S. birth rate, a longtime priority of White House figures like Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk.

Since 1990 the U.S. total fertility rate has declined from 2.1 births per woman – enough to fully replace the current population – to 1.62 births per woman in 2023, below the replacement level, according to a March report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, part of a larger decline in birth rates in wealthy peer countries.

Experts point to a variety of causes for the trend, including the increased prevalence of dual-income households, cost of living issues, and changing social mores.

While the U.S. birth rate rests between comparable nations — higher than that of Japan, Italy, and China, on par with the UK and Australia, but lower than South Korea — the declining figure is a subject of concern for many. A shrinking population could struggle to invigorate the economy and strain the social safety net, as the population skews increasingly older.

I'd say we need policies which make raising a family more affordable and worry less about giving tax breaks to wealthy people who don't need them.

1. I agree with you there. It's ironic that the so-called "pro-family" politicians are the ones that

strongly oppose policies that would not only benefit young mothers and children, but stabilize families in existence.

…there was a whole generation, called the Baby Boomers(fancy that), which came about during a period of economic boom across classes following WW II. Oh, and taxes on the rich were high. He could try that…oh, wait…

9. Yup. Back then a whole family could live off 1 salary--and own a house.

Now, even a 2 income household can't buy a house. Plus there is no paid family leave nor affordable childcare.

6. So, gut public ed, SNAP, no childcare, maternal death rate high as 3rd world countries...

....and NOTHING being done about that, no maternal healthcare (cut/gut Medicaid, ACA, etc), no abortion even to save Mom's life, trash the air, water, fire food and drug inspectors, put out propaganda AGAINST childhood vaccines, fuck up the healthcare system, education system, environment, cut everything, raise prices, push everything to the states so they raise taxes to cover it all....AND FORCE WOMEN TO BREED AND PUSH OUT BABIES.

Got it.

MAGATaliban consider America's women to be state-owned breeding livestock - NOT HUMAN BEINGS. And once those babies are born - eff you, you're on your own!

I keep telling women - DON'T DO IT. If you're not already happily hitched and with beloved kiddies, then don't do it. No self-respecting woman would subject herself to being dehumanized in a destroyed, authoritarian country with no affordable education, a destroyed and poisoned environment, no affordable healthcare, no childcare, and astronomical living expenses because SHitler shoved everything "to the states".

Give us stuff like health care, sustainable mass transit, national parks, and clean energy. And make it so we can save money to have a better life. Right now, the billionaires, mega corporations, and mega churches hoard all the wealth and it's seriously becoming a massive problem. It is insane. Trump's idea of a "golden age" only applies to those who have the money right now. Not us.
