My Filipino Nephew is Headed to America on a Tourist Visa

My wife's brother's 35-year-old son (my nephew through marriage) is a Professor at Ateneo College in Cebu, Philippines and will be traveling to the United States next month for his first visit.

He asked me what advice I could give him.

I told him, "Don't wear a Chicago Bull's hat and don't get a tattoo".

He can always download and reinstall them after he passes through customs. Don't use biometric unlock options on his phone- they're not protected, whereas requiring access to password protection requires an actual court order.

There have been multiple stories recently of both Americans returning and non-americans trying to enter, having their phones checked and social media perused.

They're arresting and detaining actual native born Americans, so he really, really shouldn't come here.

Getting a tourist visa to America is a big deal in the Philippines. They are hard to get, and he won't pass that up. His social media posts are not political. All face book family stuff.

He'll be fine. He's not political here or there.

They are arresting random people coming to this country. Citizens, not citizens, it doesn't matter. They are being arrested and detained. Just because. Just because they can. Just because there's no valid oversight right now.

It does not matter (Perhaps I should capitalize that thought. IT DOES NOT MATTER that he is a Filipino and not political, or at least not in his social media posts. Citizens are being arrested. Those born in this country are being detained. Citizens are even being sent to jails in South America to be tortured.

I think anyone planning a visit here anytime soon is simply nuts. There are lots of other places to go. Go to them.

And I say that not because I don't like him or anyone from any other country, but because I am afraid what could happen to him. I'm already worried enough about my neighbors, who are good people and work hard, pay taxes and all. I fear the day something happens to them, or they just disappear. They have three kids and a lovely dog, keep up their property nicely, and generally are good neighbors (better than the original ones, who fought loudly everyday, outside).

the Mexican cooking. Menudo, pork green chili, Mexican hamburger, Barbacoa, ... If I went to a foreign country or NY city, it would be as a food tour. May he have a safe and fun trip.
