The Secret Service said officers shot and killed an armed man who opened fire at a White House checkpoint Saturday evening. A bystander was also struck by gunfire in the incident, but it was not immediately clear how, the Secret Service said.
The unidentified man allegedly walked up to the checkpoint in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW around 6 p.m., removed a weapons from a bag and began firing at the officers posted at the spot, the Secret Service said. "Secret Service police officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died," the Secret Service said in a statement.
The bystander, who was nearby, was shot during the incident, according to the Secret Service. "It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspects initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire," the Secret Service said.
There was no immediate word on the bystander's condition. No Secret Service members were hurt during the incident, which is still under investigation.

(133,175 posts)CNN reporters heard what appeared to be dozens of gunshots near the White House on Saturday, triggering a lockdown and a rapid response from the US Secret Service.
A Secret Service official told CNN that the agency was investigating reports of shots fired at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, which is just outside the White House complex.
Members of the press corps on the North Lawn were rushed into the White House briefing room. Inside the White House, reporters were told to shelter in place as Secret Service agents shouted get down and warned of shots fired. One reporter said the sounds appeared to come from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building side of the White House complex.
Secret Service agents carrying rifles could be seen moving through the North Lawn area following the incident and blocking the White House press briefing room.

(2,759 posts)With the high levels of security everywhere in public spaces like malls, movie theaters, and stores it seems that we're being fed bad information. OTOH if these occurrences are actually happening then perhaps it will dawn on our great leaders to increase the radius of their perimeter.
What I'm saying is that with these repeated close call incidents and so called assassination attempts someone in authority is incompetent. Like an entire administration.

someone said this could have been a suicide by cop (someone who has a revolver has zero chance of hitting white house from where they were located). (gunman died)
